Ready for school
Starting school is a really exciting time for your child.
If they are able to do the following then they will find the school day much easier and enjoyable.
- Separate from their carer with little or no support
- Go to the toilet independently and be able to ask for help if they have an accident
- Dress and undress themselves including their shoes and coat
- Be able to listen and follow simple instructions
- Share toys and take turns
- Know how to handle a book, turning the pages carefully
- Recognise their name when it is written down, capital letter to start then lower case
- Sing simple nursery rhymes
- Cut along a line using scissors
- Hold a pencil using a pincer grip
- Make marks using a pencil
- Complete an age appropriate jigsaw puzzle
- Use cutlery to eat their dinner
- Climb with some confidence and an awareness of safety
- Be able to recite the numbers 1 to 10 in order
- Recognise the numerals 1 to 5
- Recognise simple 2D shapes – circle, square, triangle and rectangle
- Recognise basic colours
