Ready for school

Starting school is a really exciting time for your child.

If they are able to do the following then they will find the school day much easier and enjoyable.

• Separate from their carer with little or no support
• Go to the toilet independently and be able to ask for help if they have an accident
• Dress and undress themselves including their shoes and coat
• Be able to listen and follow simple instructions
• Share toys and take turns
• Know how to handle a book, turning the pages carefully
• Recognise their name when it is written down, capital letter to start then lower case
• Sing simple nursery rhymes
• Cut along a line using scissors
• Hold a pencil using a pincer grip
• Make marks using a pencil
• Complete an age appropriate jigsaw puzzle
• Use cutlery to eat their dinner
• Climb with some confidence and an awareness of safety
• Be able to recite the numbers 1 to 10 in order
• Recognise the numerals 1 to 5
• Recognise simple 2D shapes – circle, square, triangle and rectangle
• Recognise basic colours
