Children’s Mental Health Week 2021 - Express Yourself

From 1-7 February 2021 schools, youth groups, organisations and individuals across the UK will take part in Children’s Mental Health Week. This year’s theme is Express Yourself.

Expressing yourself is about finding ways to share feelings, thoughts, or ideas, through creativity. This could be through art, music, writing and poetry, dance and drama, photography and film, and doing activities that make you feel good.

It’s important to remember that being able to express yourself is not about being the best at something or putting on a performance for others. It is about finding a way to show who you are, and how you see the world, that can help you feel good about yourself.

Created and run by Place2Be, a children's mental health charity, the event running this week is supported by the amazing ideas and resources on their website.

A message from their Royal Patron ,the Duchess of Cambridge, outlining the importance of acknowledging mental health

Working with BAFTA kids and Oak National Academy, Place2Be have created this 25 minute assembly for you to watch at home. It has some excellent questions beneath, as well as pointers as to what times within the video specific activities happen. It is suitable for all ages.

Some talented people have got together and created some creative virtual sessions looking at some ways of expressing ourselves.

These include, Art. Drama, Creating Content, Writing and Acting.

Please see the below link to watch the sessions.

Some brilliant ideas for whole family wellbeing activities to do whilst in lockdown can be found below. Although this week is called Children's Mental Health week it is more important than ever to ensure that as parents and carers, we are looking after our own mental health as well. We can all be the best version of ourselves and by finding a creative outlet, whatever that may look like, we can start to explore who that may be.

Additionally within Children's Mental Health Week, is an event on February 3rd, Now & Beyond on Inside Out day.

Follow the below link to find out what this involves, and discover more about the theme of being kind, as you never know what someone is going through on the inside.

They have a brilliant 2 minute assembly introducing the event and lots of resources to help spark and build on some coversations to have with our children about their mental health.
